A Message from James (26-09-17)

Morning!

Well today is definitely the end of an era for me.

I shall soon be posting the podcast of my last ever radio show.

I never really planned to do the radio thing, even though as kid it was what I wanted to do.

it was while surfing the net, looking for some decent radio in the November of 2008 (i'd stopped listening to mainstream radio because it was so boring) that I discovered Donald Robert McEachern and his oldies podcasts.

His shows sparked an interest in radio again. And this man, living in Canada, provided the impetus for the last 8 and a half years.

I started chatting to him online and over time, he encouraged me to have a go.

At first, I did a podcast that was just going to go out to my disco clients, as something to replace my monthly newsletter. Then I told a few showman friends what I was doing, and they said that I should do a show featuring all the great Soul and Disco music we grew up with.

I did that and sent a copy to them. Then they said I should try and get it on one of those new online stations, and off I went.

I went from having 4 listeners to 8 to 10. I remember being so excited when I got a listener in Germany! I had gone international!

And what a ride it's been since then. From Morpher Radio and onto Solar Radio, then syndication around the world.

By 2011, I was belng listened to in 95 countries and territories around the world.

Getting upwards of 800,000 listeners in a week in China and introducing them to music from the west was a thrill. Particularly when they tried to download The Doors 'Light My Fire' within a minute of me having played it. They had so many people trying to download it, that it crashed the net in China! I was getting more listeners in one show than many local radio stations in this country get in a week. What a feeling that is.

I could go on and on about the highlights for me, but I won't. I'm lucky to be able to have chosen to call it a day on my terms,

Time moves on and so must I. I just want to thank every single person who's taken even a minute of their time to tune into one of my shows. I'm humbled by the way so many have paid compliments over the years and how I've been lucky enough to come into contact with so many people who I would never have got to know had it not been for radio.

But as I said at the beginning, without Don McEachern's support right back at the start I'd never have even made that 1st hour podcast (which is cringinly awful by the way!).

And it would be wrong of me not to mention Debz Green. She has been my greatest supporter and told me that I was good, even when I forever tell her about the mistakes I make in the show and how it's not very good. I'm the most self-critical person I know, but she's always there supporting me. I couldn't have had the run I've had without her support,

And today it all comes to an end.

Thank you all for your support. Without you, I'd have given up a long time ago. After all, without listeners, what's the point of doing the shows in the first place?

I've been really lucky to have had the opportunity to do what I loved. Thanks for being part of it.

Have a great day.
